The sun is shining, the fountains are spouting in full force and it’s finally summer in Kansas City! I love soaking up some Vitamin D and local fun in the summer months. In my opinion, these are the 5 best things to do in KC during summer…
5. Visit The City Market
The City Market is the perfect weekend destination for fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers. The market is at its best on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when it is at its peak level of vendors and commotion. The Market is ideal not only for its variety of commodities and people, but also for low prices. You come with even a little cash and leave with a bundle. My personal favorite tradition is buying a five-dollar fresh flower bundle every weekend (what a value)! See my post about my day at the City Market.
4. First Friday Fun Summer Nights
First Friday is always an event to look forward to in Kansas City, but things really heat up when the weather is nicer in the summer months. Galleries and office spaces in the Crossroads District hang their art, pour their vino, tap their kegs and open their doors to the public. Food trucks fill the air with tempting smells and the sidewalks are packed with people. During summer, more events and festivities happen on First Fridays. For instance, the street was blocked off for a stage and “Block Party” for this last First Friday (pictured above).
3. Laying Out On The Nelson Lawn
The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art offers one of the most beautiful green spaces in the city in my opinion. I love to pack a picnic and soak up the sun with the shuttlecocks in site. The spacious lawn is ideal to toss a Frisbee or football and KC citizens can be seen frolicking on this lawn on any given beautiful day. The Nelson grounds also sport beautiful sculptures and installations. If you happen to visit the Nelson lawn this summer, be sure to duck inside to see the acclaimed Frida Kahlo exhibit. The museum also offers superb exhibits that are free of charge and I’m proud to call myself a member of this great establishment! Read about the free Dia de los Muertos exhibit and event I visited at the Nelson.
2. Patio Drinking
I’m a lover of happy hour and can enjoy a brew just about anywhere, but you know what really kicks it up a notch? A patio. There’s nothing quite like an ice cold beer on a summer patio. My personal favorite patio picks in the city are:
- Harry’s Bar & Tables
- Gram & Dun – (GREAT food, too!)
- John’s Big Deck
- Sol Cantina – (life sized Jenga!)
- Harry’s Country Club – (pictured above)
- The Farmhouse
1. Outdoor Live Music
If you know me, you know I’m a live music junkie and I believe music is best enjoyed on a hot summer night with a cold beer in hand! An all-time favorite KC activities of the summer is catching some good tunes in some good weather. My favorite KC outdoor music venue would have to be Grinder’s/Crossroads KC. Nestled among the buildings of the crossroads area, this venue offers a great view of the stage, city and night sky. This summer, I have seen Of Monsters and Men (pictured above), They Might Be Giants and Hearts of Darkness on the Crossroads KC stage and I am especially looking forward to seeing ZZ Ward with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros this summer.
